Study Skills 5 Simple Steps for Straight As!

If you x-ray your syllabus, you might just find this. It’s the first week of school. Your pencils are sharpened, you’ve got your three-ring binder in tote, and to quote Paolo Nutini, you’ve â€Å"got your new shoes on and suddenly everything is right.† The new semester is a time of hope, but why leave success to chance? I've been a homework help tutor for a long time, and let me tell you: you know all of those papers your teachers give you? Don’t just crumple them up and throw them in your locker – here’s why. 1. The syllabus: Ah, the syllabus. Known by teachers as a golden ticket to a surefire A, but known by students as the most boring forty minutes of the semester. While it may be dense with logistical elements, if you don’t follow the exact instructions for submitting work and writing papers, you are almost guaranteed you will be marked down for these errors. The good news is that it takes less than thirty seconds to consult your syllabus on a stylistic or logistical question (if you’re organized), and you can consider those thirty seconds well spent. Participation. Most classes have this worked into the grade in some way, but do you really know how you’re being graded on this? If not, find out sooner rather than later. For this, there’s no better place to find out than your syllabus. If you can get participation points for simple things like bringing your textbook, bring your textbook. Don’t let this be an opportunity missed! Grading. In addition to knowing what’s being graded as participation, it’s also a good idea to know how the grading of a class is broken down in general. It could be that while you spend 90% of your effort outside of a class studying for exams, exams only account for 20% of your grade. Know what assignments are most important and focus the bulk of your time and energy focused on the important ones. 2. Study Guides: Of course, study guides are useful when studying. But, they can also be useful when learning. The chances are, your teacher already has the study guide prepared when he or she begins teaching you a new unit. Many teachers even post all of the study guides for their course on their class website at the beginning of the year. (Hmm†¦ that sounds like interesting information that could be found in a syllabus!) If you don’t already have access to the study guide for your current unit, ask your teacher if you can have a copy. Define as you go! It is extremely helpful to have a short definition of the important people, events, and concepts when your teacher announces the test date toward the end of the unit. It only takes about ten minutes a day. With this method you’ll realize days before a test if you’re missing information instead of the night before. The key here is committing to a routine. Something manageable, but effective. Your flash cards will be better if you write them while the lessons is fresh in your mind, and as an added bonus, it’s scientifically proven that new information needs to be presented and practiced at least three times to make it’s way toward the long term memory. 3. Tests and Quizzes: Teachers are busy. For this reason, never throw away a test or quiz! Tests are composed of many similar, if not exactly identical, questions that are on the quizzes. The same goes for the relation between tests and exams. While it might be human nature to try to avoid a problem marked with a big X on a quiz, keeping that quiz in a safe place and practicing those troublesome questions can be instrumental in succeeding on your next test. You might think of quizzes like practices for the big game (your test). If you are a basketball player and you have trouble learning to dribble you don’t skip that skill and go on to shooting. You could never play in the game. Don’t shy away from difficult problems, but rather, embrace them! The study guide that you worked on throughout the unit and your quizzes will make up a major portion of your test†¦ so stop guessing what will be on the test and start working! 4. Your Teacher: One of the most valuable resources you have is your teacher! Don’t be bashful about visiting during office hours. Chances are, your teacher will be very grateful that you have brought your specific questions about tests, notes, study guides, etc. to have a personal discussion rather than using up valuable class time. Your time is valuable too! So, don’t get too caught up dwelling on what your teacher meant at the end of class when she said X or if you have been looking over your quiz and still can’t figure out how to do Y correctly. Go ask! It’s much more efficient and accurate than struggling through it on your own. As an added bonus, you appear the conscientious and respectful student that you are. Of course, feel free to stop by your teacher’s office hours too if you just want to discuss content you found interesting, but be sure to go if you are unclear about any expectations! The only way you can manage your success is if you r eally know what is expected. 5. Assignment Guidelines: This one is simple, yet, so difficult. Please, read all of the directions. Of all the types of assignment guidelines, the rubric is the most specific and most helpful. Generally they consist of three categories loosely translated as: above, meeting, and below expectation. If you’re shooting for a C or a B, then look at the â€Å"meets expectation† as your guide. However, if you’re looking for that A, then let your eyes keep drifting until they meet a slightly more rigorous standard. Some elements of your assignment cannot be controlled, so take advantage of those that can! If you are required to use six sources, use seven. You will be guaranteed success on that element. There are parts of assignments that you can know for certain you have completed to a standard of excellence. In shooting for guidelines that are â€Å"above the expectation† you give yourself a bit of a cushion for when, for example, you and your teacher have diffe rent views of when it means to â€Å"explain in depth† or â€Å"analyze the main similarity of (blank) and (blank).† These are parts of the assignment that will be graded with some subjectivity, so be sure to rack up the points where you know you can! There's organized, and then there's psychotic. Get Organized! With the exception of your teacher (unless he or she is really fast), this may sound like a lot to keep track of. It is. If you’re serious about succeeding that means the old one folder per class (or God forbid, per semester) is a thing of the past. It’s time to invest in some binders and tabs to keep all of your past assignments, notes, study guides and quizzes organized by unit. If you do this, it will reduce the stress of final exams and all that time that was once spent looking for lost notes can be spent actively studying, learning, and getting better grades. Juvenile justice is a part of the criminal law put in place only for younger people who are not old enough yet to be held accountable for their crimes. In most cases this apply to youthful offenders usually under the age 18 who are accused of committing a delinquent or criminal activities. So, their case will typically go through the juvenile justice system. The juvenile justice system is the initial system used in the United States to handle youths who are convicted for engaging in criminal acts. The juvenile justice system and adult criminal law system are comparable in several ways. For instance, both of these system processes include arrest, detainment, hearings, depositions, and reentry. However, the difference is the juvenile justice system operates with the assumption that the younger people are essentially different from the adults in levels of rehabilitation and responsibility. Throughout, history the American justice system has changed numerous times to properly serve youthful offenders. According, to Hess Wright (2012), Juvenile justice in the United States is generally recognized as having progressed through five distinct stages. During the Puritan Period (1646-1824), laws from England were brought over and it was believed that children sins were inherent. So, juveniles would be strictly punished when it was necessary and when children misbehave during this period their families were in control of their punishments. However, when the parents failed to punish their children community punishments and control was put forward by church and other social institutions to handle juvenile offenders. Trials and punishment were based on age, and anyone older than 7 was subject to the courts (Hess Wright, 2012, p. 34). Children 7 years of age and younger would not be held responsible for criminal acts, but once a child reached the age 8 it was believed that they were capable of telling the difference between good and evil therefore, they could be found guilty of their crimes. Rebelliousness and disobedience were two offenses that juvenile offenders age 7 and older could receive punishments for during this period. The Refuge Period (1824-1899), during this period poverty was a crime, so children were removed from those environments to eliminate it and improve juveniles behaviors. That being said, separate institutions like reform schools, houses of refuge, and foster homes were created for youths. However, delinquents, neglected, and foster children were still housed together in these institutions for juveniles. It was believed by child savers that the unhealthy environment a child was in was the reason they were bad, so children received treatment by being placed in houses of refuge or reform schools. Reformers felt that when a child was put in the justice system the main focus should be on what and how a child became what they are and how society could help them, instead of focusing solely on their punishments. Other belief was youth should be treated/rehabilitated not punished and they should not be held responsible as an adult. Numerous of important events transpired during this period tha t transformed juvenile justice. In 1870, the first use of separate trials for juveniles was established and in 1880 the first probation system applicable to juveniles initiated according to (Hess Wright, 2012). The third stage was the Juvenile Court Period (1899-1960) it came about during the Progressive Era or Age of Reform and it was believed by reformers that children were a product of their environments so, it was the parents duty to raise obedient and hardworking children. The first juvenile court was established in 1899 and this was how children were handled primarily handled. The 1899 Juvenile Court Act created public policy based on medical model which focused on individual diagnosis and treatment. This act also included separation of children from adults in institutions and use of probation increased for better rehabilitation. Criminal cases involving Youth age 16 and under were removed from criminal jurisdiction and not held accountable for their offenses. Chicago Boys Court and Youth Counsel Bureau was the start of diversion. four religion-based community service agencies were used to treat the youth and if supervision successful and the courts were satisfied no record made of th e incident.

ABDUL NAYEEM PhD Batch -2010 COMPUTERIZED LAYOUT ANALYSIS TECHNIQUES In the field of computerized layout analysis, a number of computerized layout programs have been developed since the 1960s and 70s. But the most time tested computerized layout techniques and software program packages that are frequently used are- CRAFT, CORELAP, ALDEP, etc. Originally developed in late 60’s and early 70s, many of these packages are still around with latest additions to their features. Layout problems often involve a given number of facilities which must be located in the plane. Each of these facilities has a given area, and the cost of interactions between every facility pair is known. Problem optimality is achieved when facilities do not overlap and the total cost, which is the sum of weighted distances between all pairs of facilities, is minimized. CRAFT (Computerized Relative Allocation of Facilities Technique) CRAFT (Computerized Relative Allocation of Facilities technique) is the most widely applied. CRAFT algorithm was originally developed by Armour and Buffa in the 1970s. It is more widely used than ALDEP and CORELAP. It starts with an initial layout and improves the layout by interchanging the departments pair-wise so that the transportation cost is minimized. CRAFT method uses the same basic idea used for a factory layout with certain significant operational differences. It requires a load and a distance matrix as initial inputs and also feeds in data regarding the cost involved per unit distance moved. With these inputs and an initial layout in the program, CRAFT attempts to improve the relative placement of the departments as measured by total material handling cost for the layout. CRAFT is a method of successive improvements. CRAFT uses a pair wise exchange to develop an improved layout. It makes improvements by exchanging pairs of departments iteratively until no further cost reductions are possible. The program calculates the effect on the total cost of exchanging departments; if this leads to a reduction, the change is made and it leads to iteration. The CRAFT requirements are:  · Initial layout  · Flow data  · Cost per unit distance  · Total number of departments  · Area of departments The CRAFT model represents a breakthrough in the ability to systematically evaluate layout problems having complex flow. The superiority of results obtained by earlier techniques was in no small way dependent upon the art of the layout analyst. The CRAFT model can generate and evaluate layouts having as many as 40 departments in less than one minute of computer time. In addition, any department or departments may be fixed in particular locations. The inputs to the CRAFT model are similar to those used in link analysis; travel charting and operations sequence analysis. CRAFT takes interdepartmental flow data and weights them by materials handling cost data; the result is a cost weighted flow matrix. The only additional input is an initial block lay-out which may be the existing layout or any proposed layout. The computer determines the centroid of each department and measures the distances between centroids on rectangular coordinates. The result is a distance matrix which is multiplied by the cost weighted flow matrix to determine the materials handling cost for that particular block layout. The governing heuristic algorithm then looks for the largest potential materials handling cost reduction obtained by switching the location of any 2 or 3 departments. The change so indicated is made, the new block diagram is printed out, and the procedure is repeated until a block diagram is produced which cannot be improved. In theory, if a construction procedure, using a method unrelated to the pairwise exchange algorithm, can produce layouts competitive with those produced by CRAFT applied to random initial layouts, then the construction procedure followed by CRAFT should produce lower cost layouts than CRAFT alone. This technique only utilizes graphic and schematic analysis for materials flow but does present a well-organized enumeration of pertinent qualitative factors. If the user chooses ‘Existing Problem’ option then he or she can run the problem by pressing the ‘RUN’ button on the spreadsheet. In the data input form the user is required to specify number of departments, building length, building width, sweep width, number of layouts, and to choose either from-to or REL chart option. On pressing ‘OK’, the spreadsheet is updated and the area input form is displayed. The user is required to input the area for each of the departments. The user can then click the ‘OK’ button to write the area values to the spreadsheet. If the user had chosen ‘REL’ option in the data input form then the user is prompted to specify weights of the relationships else the user is asked to provide cut-off values in addition to the weights. The implementation requires user to define weights in decreasing order. The updating activity of the spreadsheet occurs leading to the user to input flow values or relationship between the departments depending upon the previous choice of ‘from-to’ or ‘REL’ chart made by the user.
